To see this metamorphosis of the caterpillar breaking free from the cocoon and emerging as a beautiful butterfly, that is my passion and greatest joy.”

Angela Pratt

Angela PrattI believe that one of the single greatest obstacles we face as a community is our own sense of inferiority, internalized oppression and shame. “As long as the mind is enslaved,” King wrote, “the body can never be free.” As long as blind people remain ashamed of who we are, we will never realize the true equality and freedom we so desire. We must first take pride in ourselves as a community by truly believing that it is ok to be blind. When this is recognized your walk changes, your attitude changes and your appearance changes. It is written that what a man/woman thinks about themselves, so are they.

I believe that it Is important for us to lead the charge on Braille literacy, safe blind travel, accessible technology and gainful employment, but to me
it is equally important that we create communal institutions where people, who are blind and visually impaired, can come together by choice and consistently receive positive messages that teaches new values and beliefs, and recognizes the dignity, humanity, and worth of all people. When we refuse to see ourselves as victims, then and only then can we be committed to building a community of people who will come together to create a single force that will challenge wrongs and status quos.

We must put effort into transforming the hearts, minds, and the soul of our people, for that is where our true power lies.

You can’t reset the winds of life. But you CAN surely adjust your sails.

Angela Pratt 2010
